A local business listing is an online profile that contains your business name, address, phone number, and other details. There are many websites and directories on which local business owners are allowed to create free business listings. Some you may already have heard about include Google+ Local, DexKnows, Yelp, Bing Places, Internet Yellow Pages, and Yahoo! Local. You can check your business listings free in the top 30 directories HERE.

You could hire someone full-time because there are 1000’s of directories. But it is wise to concentrate on Google, Bing, Yahoo, and just a few others perhaps. Concentrate on the big ones. And be on all the maps, especially Google.

  • Apart from your physical address, the NAP (Name, Address and Phone number), should be consistent with the actual name of your business, and it has to be the same wherever these details appear online.

More specifically, you should use an exact template for your NAP wherever you use these details – whether it is on your website, Google My Business (GMB), Google+ , Facebook account or other websites and directory listings.

Build out your listings with logos, images, videos, website URL and other key information such as hours to make your listings more informative and attractive to potential customers.

The more positive, authentic reviews your business receives, the better your business will appear in searches, both via the search engines and the review sites themselves.

Be proactive about responding to all types of user reviews. If the post is positive, thank the customer for their feedback and encourage them to use your services again. If the post is negative, explain that you appreciate the feedback and ask the customer to get in contact with you about their concerns so you can address their problems.

Take my hometown of Fairport NY, or my second home in Pittsburgh (where a 10 minute walk could take you through 3 towns), or my current home in Spartanburg. How do you cover all the towns?
