SEO Best Practices in 2017 Part 5 – Local SEO

We all know that a key component of any small business’ marketing strategy is to effectively position their business in search engine results. But is it possible to dominate search results with content you control or at least content you’ve influenced?

Yes. By Locality.

A local business listing is an online profile that contains your business name, address, phone number, and other details. There are many websites and directories on which local business owners are allowed to create free business listings. Some you may already have heard about include Google+ Local, DexKnows, Yelp, Bing Places, Internet Yellow Pages, and Yahoo! Local. You can check your business listings free in the top 30 directories HERE.

You could hire someone full-time because there are 1000’s of directories. But it is wise to concentrate on Google, Bing, Yahoo, and just a few others perhaps. Concentrate on the big ones. And be on all the maps, especially Google.

Common Tips That Businesses (and Some SEO Firms) Miss

  • Apart from your physical address, the NAP (Name, Address and Phone number), should be consistent with the actual name of your business, and it has to be the same wherever these details appear online.

More specifically, you should use an exact template for your NAP wherever you use these details – whether it is on your website, Google My Business (GMB), Google+ , Facebook account or other websites and directory listings.

Build out your listings with logos, images, videos, website URL and other key information such as hours to make your listings more informative and attractive to potential customers.

Besides having contact information to your website, it is very important that you have an actual map on your website to show your precise location. Make sure your hours are up to date. Make your phone number “clickable” on mobile.

  • Maximize Your Online Business Reviews

Google takes reviews about businesses quite seriously because people looking for personalized information check reviews often to find insights about what the business actually offers and whether it will benefit them. You can easily find out what customers are saying about you HERE.

SEO Best Practices in 2017 Part 5 – Local SEO – More Tips

  • Build Social Media Links

Consistently share links from your website content via your Facebook, Twitter and other social media channels, and encourage others to pass along the information as well.

  • Encourage And Respond To Online User Reviews

Encourage your customers to leave ratings and reviews of your business if they are satisfied with your business products or services. The more positive, authentic reviews your business receives, the better your business will appear in searches, both via the search engines and the review sites themselves.

Be proactive about responding to all types of user reviews. If the post is positive, thank the customer for their feedback and encourage them to use your services again. If the post is negative, explain that you appreciate the feedback and ask the customer to get in contact with you about their concerns so you can address their problems.

  • Engage Regularly Via Social Media

SEO Best Practices in 2017 Part 5 - Local SEO Done RightSocial media activity plays a notable role in local business’ visibility in search results. The more proactive your social media strategy, the higher likelihood your pages will attract followers and in turn, appear within search since Google indexes, Twitter, Facebook and of course, Google+.

If some of these tips sound like “Content Marketing” to you, you are wiser than your years.

SEO Best Practices in 2017 Part 5 – Local SEO

One of the very best ways to grab listings in the Big-Daddy Directory more commonly known as Google, is through Content Marketing. Take my hometown of Fairport NY, or my second home in Pittsburgh (where a 10 minute walk could take you through 3 towns), or my current home in Spartanburg. How do you cover all the towns?

SEO Best Practices for 2017 - Mobile ResponsiveWell, back in the Yellow Pages days, before the internet, you bought and paid for listings under the town localities appearing after the main heading. In Fairport? You’d want listings in Penfield, East Rochester, Pittsford, Brighton and Victor. In Pittsburgh, too many to mention. In Spartanburg, you’d want to be seen in Boiling Springs, Greer…you get the idea.

And in the age of the Internet (not to be confused with the age of Aquarius), you don’t spend $168/year (in 1985 dollars) for your name, address and phone number in the yellow pages under your town, then another $168 for each other town. You do Targeted Content Marketing which comes with way more than an address and phone number, but rather engaging content that bring results by placing those blog posts in Google, Bing and Yahoo searches, covering 97% of all search engines.
