Why Backlinks Are Important to Small Business

Why BackLinks Are Important to Small Business – Long known to help with SEO, there are two easy ways to to build backlinks, and one very bad way.

Why Backlinks Are Important to Small Business

If you’d like proof that backlinks are important, why do all the “build your own” website builders and all the real website developers put a link to THEIR website at the bottom of yours?

Since most small businesses are not familiar with backlinks, exactly what is a backlink and why are backlinks important for small business?

The number of backlinks a website has is generally a good indicator of its popularity or importance with search engines, which is why backlinks matter so much in a search engines algorithm.

Simply put, a backlink is a clickable link from another website to your website.

Now of course, your site can’t be a CNN or NBC News, but if everything else was equal online between you and your primary competitor, a few good backlinks can move you up in the rankings.

But we need to warn you first about the phone calls, emails and bad websites that taunt you with “Link Building”

What they are really talking about is Link Farms

A link farm is any group of web sites that all hyperlink to every other site in the group. Although some link farms can be created by hand, most are created through automated programs and services. A link farm is a form of spamming the index of a web search engine (sometimes called spamdexing).

And it does more more harm than good.

Link Farms are black hat SEO techniques may give you a small boost in the short term, but ultimately, black hat SEO practices leave you worse off than when you started.

When you pay a dodgy SEO company for a few hundred backlinks, they quickly spin loads of crappy, shallow content, embed links to your site, and automatically send these blog posts out to their many affiliated low-grade sites, that are no use to anyone but the Google Bots. In the years since Google and Bing search engines started factoring backlinks into their ranking algorithms, they’ve become very aware of how people try to game the system.

So when you hear about businesses that have sites trying to recover from “manual penalties,” Google has basically put its finger on the scales, forcing their sites down in the search rankings, compared to where the search engine algorithm would normally rank them prior.

And some big companies have been bit…JCPenny, BMW, and many others took the bait For instance, JCPenny got severely penalized going from Page 1 to Page 17 overnight.

Search engines (Bing and most notably Google) have countered the link farm movement by identifying specific attributes associated with link farm pages and filtering those pages from indexing and search results. In many cases, entire domains are removed from the search engine indexes in order to prevent them from influencing search results.

Don’t say we didn’t warn you.

Why Backlinks Are Important to Small Business – Real Backlinks

Why Backlinks Are Important to Small Business

Simply put, genuine backlinks show Google that your website has some “authority”.

There are two easy ways to get real backlinks.

Links from product sites are a good start. For instance you may be an authorized dealer for a particular product. Does the manufacturer have an online list (with links!) of dealers? Bing! Backlink!

Or maybe you sell an awesome dog bed. Call breeders that have bought from you and kindly ask for a link on their site. Then do the same for them. These are real links that Google takes notice of.

Why Backlinks Are Important to Small Business – Real Backlinks Even Easier

Most business websites have a blog/news/updates page. Some post often and some post rarely.

But say you carry a super premium organic cat food in your pet supply store. Contact the company and offer to share customer success stories. They will likely jump at the free publicity. It’s called “Guest Blogging”, and it’s another way to create quality backlinks.

You don’t even need to upload your logo and build the link into that in the post (but it’s preferred). You can just as easily just enter the website address in the blog (like this).

Boom! Link! Bonus Points if it’s a high quality website.

Now there are more important signals to Google such as user friendliness, mobile-responsiveness, site load speed, dynamic vs passive, content marketing and other signals that come first, but quality backlinks are a great way to increase your online presence and authority.

A good SEO company can help with backlink ideas, and help you in executing those ideas. But a good SEO will will not auto-create hundreds or even thousands of useless links that only end up hurting. or worse destroying, all your other efforts.
